Tips for how to help an older lab to lose weight?

My 8 year old yellow lab really needs to lose about 10 pounds. Like most labs, she is a chow hound – and always hungry. She has significant arthritis in one rear ankle- so going to the dog park and running after tennis balls is not possible anymore. We go for walks – but can’t do them for very long. She was put on prednisone for bad itchy allergies 1 year ago (also started allergy shots), and that is making her more hungry! Unfortunately since we got a puppy last March who needed to be trained, my lab got a few too many treats. That has stopped. I have started her a Canidae Platinum dry dog food (low calories) for senior and overweight dogs. I am using baby carrots for treats. Does anyone have any other suggestions for low calorie treats or food additions? Also how do you deal with a cute dog that stares at you and tells you she is starving? Thanks – I want her to be as healthy and comfortable as possible.

I have a black Labrador who is now 4 years old, we’ve had him since he was 2. I want to be able to take him out for walks and take him off his leash when at a field so he can run around. Has anyone got any good tips on how to train him to behave and not run off to other dogs or people when he’s off his leash, please? :)

Help for training my dog with roads?

When we got our puppy (a Borador named Biko, Borador being a labrador/border collie cross) he was very anxious by the roadside, shaking anytime a car passed by etc.
A few weeks later my dad took him out and while he was bent over scooping up his business, Biko pulled out onto he road, on his lead which was still held by my dad, also pulling my dad over, and got hit by a car.
He broke his leg in 5 places and had to get reconstructive surgery on his nose.
Thankfully he has fully recovered, but we want to train him to behave whilst off his lead.
He is no longer anxious near roads and walks obediently beside us on his lead.
He is perfectly fine when let off the lead in grassy, closed off areas and always comes back when shouted on, but we are very limited to where we can take hm whilst off the lead because of the situation with the roads.
Does anyone have any tips as to how we can try to train him off the lead on the roadside without a repeat of the crash incident?

Thankyou x
I live in Scotland and my town has no laws for leads etc.
Most other dogs in out area can walk on the pavement/sidewalk without leads and never venture onto the road.
I want to do this because we can’t get an extendable lead as this wouldn’t help at all in preventing a reoccurance of the original problem, and the only leather leads we can find are short.

Labrador Retriever going crazy?

On his walks he has began pulling really bad and when it’s time to go home he sits down and will not move.

I take him for 1 hour at least a day, I can’t let him off the lead as he runs off.

Can’t really afford training.

How do I train my hyperactive Labrador puppy?

Hi my name is Sally, I’m 13 years old and I have a 3 month old yellow purebred Labrador puppy.
She is a very lovely dog and we all care for her very much.
Her only problem is that she Is way too hyperactive. So far she has mastered Sit, Fetch, To go up and down the staris, and to come when called, I’ve been trying to teach her to Lie down but whenever I try She just bites and doesn’t listen. We take her for daily walks for about 10 minutes everyday 1-2 times a day.
She likes to grab shoes and play with them and bite our feet sometimes when we’re walking and it’s getting really annoying.
I just want to know if that’s normal and if there is anyway that I can get her to just calm down and let me pat her and train her with her biting me. (I would also like to add that she’s not sick or unhealthy so it’s not a medical problem)
Im really looking forward to all of your responses. :)
We also spend up to 2 hours playing and she plays with her chew toys.

My fiance and I have had this dog since November of 2010. We rescued him from the pound. He was one of a litter of eight male puppies and we were given no information on the parents. He looks like a lab mostly but some people say he has some characteristics of a pitbull as well. My fiance and I DO NOT want to get rid of him, but we are at a loss of what else to do. This is the worst dog we have EVER had. And we have tried everything from cage training to the clicker to a shock collar to a sonic sound remote. Nothing works. If you reprimand him, he actually barks back at you. He doesn’t listen AT ALL to anyone telling him to stay off the couch or not to eat food off the table or anything. He bites hard, and when I lay on the bed, he actually bites the back of my neck and my fiances neck. Spanking doesn’t work, he still barks and bites back. My fiance and I definitely want children sometime but neither of us trust this dog enough to even let him near OTHER children. If we do get rid of him we can’t even consider giving him to a family because he bites. We both love this dog to death and want it to work but he is destructive and has destroyed a leather couch we haven’t even had for a month that we still need to make payments on. We live in an apartment, but he goes for daily walks and occasionally goes to the dog park or a friends back yard when we go over for barbeques. We put him through a training course at PetSmart and he failed MISERABLY. He was the barking trouble maker in the class. We got him the shock collar and he learned that he only gets shocked when he barks loudly so he started just moaning quietly enough so that it was still annoying but not shocking him. I am with him all morning and my fiance is with him all night. What can we do?!?!?!

How do you raise a Labrador puppy?

Hi! My name is Sally, I’m 13 years old and I’m about to get a puppy, ( It’s either a Labrador or a Golden Retriever)
The problem is, is that I have never own a dog before (and neither has anyone in my family) and I Dont know a lot about raising puppy’s.
I would really like it if someone could help me with these problems like: how often do I have to take it out for walks, when do I have to brush it, how often do I take it to the vet and more.
I am really looking forward to your answers! :)
