My in-laws, with whom my husband and I are currently living with have two dogs. Both are rescues, one is a Labrador/Border Collie, she is spayed. The other is a terrier mix that we have had less than a week now, she is not spayed but is going to the vet for that on Thursday.
ANYWAYS,
This morning I had a doctors appointment, so I opened the front door (I had NO idea that the dogs were not trained to NOT bolt out the open doorway!!) And out run the dogs.
I am 34 weeks pregnant and I was unable to chase them down, so my father-in-law had to.
The first dog he grabbed was the terrier mix (who seems to think she’s MY dog, and rightly so, I feed/train/walk/play with/let out to go to the bathroom) he grabbed her by the SCRUFF, and lifted her up (she is NO pup), she yelped, and he tossed (yes tossed) her into the yard. How he got the lab mix I don’t know, I had to leave. He is VERY gentle with them otherwise, but his punishment methods are HORRID!
We are living with them until at least March.
How can I train these dogs to NOT bolt out the door and face his "punishments" they will not follow through on a training method I set up despite my experience in dog training.
The lab mix will not listen to anyone other than her master (father-in-law), the terrier mix listens to ME.
Any help would be appriceated.
I have never tried to train a dog without everyone training them the same way.
Well, this bit of information you are about to get doesn’t pertain to my questions (I have a couple of them.) So, I am getting my 5 year old pure bred Golden Retriever spayed in a couple of weeks. Okay, back to my questions. I bought her when she was a puppy and I am now starting to clicker- train her. Also, I am getting her groomed at my vet’s office for her first time ever (other than us.) So here are my questions:
*What can I use as treats for the clicker training that I would probably find in my home. I don’t want to buy anything.
*What can I do for my dog to calm her for her grooming in a couple of weeks because I won’t be there (it’s like a drop of thing and then you pick them up later in the day when they are done with the groom.)
when luvina was 3months, i once started to house train her but the rain season started and and she was terribly confused because i couldn’t take her out when the rain was heavy (i should add that some fellows in this very website told me that i should take her out even when it rain heavily i did so and the poor puppy fell sick, when i took her to the vet he told that because there is a flow of dirty water in the street i should not take her out when it rains, well those friends have not definitely considered the locality of where i live) she was potty trained and used to go to the balcony so i prefer ed to let her continue that till the rain season is completely over.
it is about 7 days that i have decided to limit her access to the balcony so that she learns to hold before i start taking her out for potty. but when she seas the door is closed even if she had done the business half an hour age she does it behind the door and when i yell at her saying no( not yelling loudly for sure) she puts on an " it is not a big deal" face and walks away not sooner that finishing the job though. she is 5 months and she is supposed to hold it for six hours why she does not? even those one week that i was taking her out before rain started, she had perfectly understood that i want her to go out and she used to lick my hands when she felt the urge, but if i was a liitle bit slow in changing my cloth for any reason she wouldn’t trouble herself holding it, and i should add that she used to ask for being taken out upto 20 times a day.
how can i teach her to hold it?
how many times am i supposed to take a 5months old dog out for the business?
and
if they say that she should hold it for 6 hours at this age why when it comes to houetraining they say that i should take her out 10 minutes after drinking eating and getting up from a nap?
i am not a lazy owner who looks for a simple way i just want to know that what SHOULD i do? if i am supposed to take her out every single hour ok i will do that but what about holding it
and the last question when she licks me as a sign for potty and she has been taken out 20 minutes ago shall i take her out again? if i don’t won’t she think that I HAVE NOT LEARNT what licking means?
( sorry it became so long but please correct my english as well, i am not an english speaker)
I have a couple questions. I adopted a pitbull/lab mix last night and I was told he was around 8 weeks old. I really don’t think he is, he barely has any teeth, so I fed him wet food, and he has this pink bump on his butt. I am taking him to the vet today, I just wanted to get advice on Crating him and helping him with his teething.
Where I got him from they kept him outside in the durt and I keep my dogs inside. I have him in a crate as he is not potty trained. My other lab who is 2 sleeps in his bed. The baby cried and cried. I took him out, i played with him, he pottied and still no sleep. So I gave him a little bit of milk and bam he was done crying and passed out for a couple hours. This went on all night. I just didn’t give him milk every time. So my question is what is a good way to crate train?
Second question, he is teething, he has toys but all he wants to do is suck on my finger, not bit but suck. Is this part of teething? This is my first puppy, so if these questions sound stupid sorry. My other lab I rescued when he was a year.
it is very cute when he suckles my finger. I was so worried that he is not getting the right food he needs. He is a cutie.
Thank you for the advice on the crate. I don’t crate my other dog at night, because he is potty trained so I have never crated at night. It weakens my heart
my black labrador 7 month old has bloodshot eyes whenever she is under stress/anxiety. she does have severe anxiety and we are working to help her with that.
on the scleral of each eye (white area around pupil).. sometimes its more then just bloodshot but pure red.
any idea if common?
the vet said its from her getting so "hyper" and having stress under situations and her nylon choker cutting off blood supply such as when we go to public places or during her obedience classes. however she gets this way without that on when at home and she gets anxiety caused from visitors for example.
her trainer said her bloodshot eyes are caused from stress/anxiety only and not the nylon choker.
also if anyone has a labrador with anxiety what helps? we train with her, give her mental challenges/games, retrieve with her, she has an acre of land to run on. she sleeps very little. i do give her melatonin once per day which helps more then the rescue remedy did.
thank you for any advice :]
i have a female labrador. Her name is Dizzy. she is 10 months old labrador. Please tell me if my puppy is healthy by viewing this video.
u may think this is for my video publicity, but it is not. the vet rarely comes to my place to have a look at her health conditions. So i choose this way to find out if it is healthy.
Im 13 and am getting a dog. i have always loved dogs and am wondering if a Golden Retriever would be a suitable dog. i would be grooming, training and exercising it which i already do with me male miniature poodle who is VERY big for a mini. I would be willing to give it 45 minutes exercise not counting running around all day with my poodle. i will also groom it as much as it needs. i will train it and stick with what it is and isn’t aloud to do. Thank so much.
i will try to make sure the puppy and parents are vet checked before i bring it home. especially concerning hip dysplasia .
I have an 8 week old boxer puppy and he’s going to the vet on Friday. My neighbor that I am very close to want me to bring him to see her 5 year old well trained Lab/golden retriever mix.I was planning to bring him the following weekend. Is that ok?
About 2 months ago, I asked the above question and received really good answers from two people – - one I cannot remember and the other was named something like ‘vet in training’ or ‘almost vet’ or something like those.
If that person could contact me, I would like to update you on what happened with my dog. Thanks.
Hi! My name is Sally, I’m 13 years old and I’m about to get a puppy, ( It’s either a Labrador or a Golden Retriever)
The problem is, is that I have never own a dog before (and neither has anyone in my family) and I Dont know a lot about raising puppy’s.
I would really like it if someone could help me with these problems like: how often do I have to take it out for walks, when do I have to brush it, how often do I take it to the vet and more.
I am really looking forward to your answers!
