I will be picking up my Labrador pup in three weeks and am looking for any advice regarding bringing it up in it’s first year. Are the wooden floors downstairs going to be a problem, crate training tips etc….
We house trained our black lab pup using puppy training pads in the house when she was too young to go outside. The pads were in the hall (where she sleeps at night and where shes kept when we’re out with a stair gate so she cant go up stairs) She was really good at them and only peed there. Once she had her jags we started moving her pads outside. SHe picked up going to the toilet outside quickly and during the day when we are in and can let her out regularly she goes outside, however if she can access the hall (if we don’t shut the door) or if we go out during the day she still pees in the hall. How do we teach her its not ok to still do the toilet in this area? Should we start crate training her? WHen we get up in the morning she has peed and pooed ALOT in the hall. Not sure what to do! Shes now 5 months! She is also chewing the wall and door frame in hall which is making me want to crate train!
I am a boxer aficionado, although I have no pre experience of owning one. I stay in a flat, and also do have access to the park in my complex. I would stay out of my home for almost 10-12 hrs MON-SAT. However my dad can probably take my role in my absence with the puppy. I am ok with taking the puppy for a daily morning and/or evening walk. One of my friends has a LAB and is doing well with similar conditions. However Im heavily considering a Boxer puppy because of the most obvious reasons- Its traits n my compatibility with the breeds nature n behavior. I am not much keen on a labrador. Somehow I feel i should be seeking expert advice on this. I have been researchin a lot abt Boxers. And Im theoretically aware of crate training, potty training and also positive reinforcement techniques. Also would like to add is that I am not going to confine the puppy to the crate for long hours anyways. My mom would be at home throughout (being a housewife), i believe the puppy’s companionship needs would be surely met, though she wouldnt be of a great help. Im largely depending on my dad cos he is a dog lover too and is supportive of getting a puppy. I also have plans to train the puppy on a consistent basis over a period of 10-15 mins (depending) per day. I cant wait to have a puppy and Im surely positive abt taking fullest care of my pet, at any cost. Do suggest a breed if not for a boxer. I am really looking out for a loyal and affable friend when i recall a pet…
I have already had this query by 4 other dog lovers..N i sincerely thank them. However i wish to reopen this for few more opinions… Do post your valuable feedback.

I am currently a student and I will be gone for about 8 hours Mon.-Fri. from 7:50-4:30 and I was wondering which would be better doggy pads or crate training? If it was me I would certainly not want to be in a crate for 8 hours so should I use puppy pads in a closed area in my house.
P.S. I plan on getting a labrador
p.s. I forgot to say I am available for a long time before and after school to play/exercise with my dog, and either on of my parents are their on those 5 days of the week.
I also have a very big backyard.
I have an 11 week old labrador/greyhound puppy who has a few issues we hope to solve with crate training, but as i am new to this concept, I would like to ask a little advice.
Firstly, I am struggling to find some good info on toilet training with a crate. My vet advised to have some puppy pads in the crate overnight with the pup as well as food and water but alot of the websites i have read advise against this. What is the best method?
We are mainly trying this due to some bad chewing behaviour. I know she is only young and it is in her nature to chew, but she has pulled a significant amount of wall paper off the wall so i am a little concerned about that. Obviously wall paper is not a recommended diet for a pup so i worry about her swallowing some, hence one more reason for the crate.
As far as biting goes, she jumps up and snaps at our hands alot. She has a tendency to crouch down with her back end in the air and growl, she will then bark and lunge up to bite. A friend insists this is her challenging authority so i would like to hear thoughts on controlling this behaviour.
She is a lovely dog and some of her training is going well, she just has some destructive tendencies that i would like some constructive advice on correcting please.
Thanks for helping
Just a quick side note, i don’t work at the moment but do try to leave her alone for a little while every day to hopefully help with separation problems.
I know how to:
Control Barking AND biting
house train
leash train
obedience training
crate training
no table scraps
halo/nulo food
1 hour of walks/ play time for exercise
mental stimulation
i understand the costs
anything i’m missing oh! and i know how to groom a lab
My sister and I are going to get a golden retriever puppy soon. Do you have any advice on the breed or basic training (potty training, crate training, etc.)?
I have two puppies – a 16 week old beagle (Charlie) and a 7 and a half month old labrador (Miles). I’ve had Charlie since he was 8 weeks, but only got Miles a week ago.
Charlie will sleep in until noon if I let him. Miles on the other hand will wake up between 3.30am and 5.30am (has varied every day so far). When Charlie was really young he would occasionally wake up and cry a little (when he was between 8-9 wks) but doesn’t anymore. Miles however wakes up, cries a bit and then barks!
They both sleep together in a smallish room of our house and they go to bed of a night at around 9.00pm. There is no fuss when they go to bed – each will go in there themselves. They are taken out to go to the toilet just before they go to bed also.
I’m afraid to say that each time he barks I am almost obliged to get up to him as he is so loud, I’m afraid he’ll wake the neighbours! I have also not established a method of training to help him adjust to sleeping this way.
What can I do???
I am not a fan of crate training by the way, so please do not suggest that.
I don’t mind getting up early myself(around 5.30am is fine) but preferably not before then!!
Hi Elizabeth… I just wanted some advice and did not need such a rude answer. These are my first puppies since leaving home. For some reason, I don’t really know why, I half expected Miles to be able to hold if for 8 hours. Obviously not. There is also nothing wrong with not likeing crate training…. Please, helpful answers only…
She never had a crate so crate training is not applicable. i have been doing all the training advices in the net which is to bring her out and tel her to make poo and praise her but she cant seem to remember. i have a huge house and she still pees and poos even we scold her while on act and despite the many times we bring her out. i usually tie her in a chain and knot it in al pole inside the house to keep her from wandering but most of the time, she can walk around the house. how can i potty train in this situation?
