when you go to the door (before you let him out) when he follows look at him and say gotta go potty? then again __name__ gotta go potty? make hiim bark at you to let you know. then give him a treat. then when he goes potty come back in say goooddd boyyy give another treat. Keep doing this for a couple weeks and he should be goodd : ) golden retrievers are really smart.
If the dog knows to only pee outside, it should come to you and whimper to tell you it wants/needs somethin.
you have to keep him outside until he goes. 15 minutes after every meal he eats he must be put outside (they usually go within 15-30 minutes after eating) he will eventually become accustomed to going outside and will start scratching on the door to be let out
you need to train him to pee outside and that it’s not okay to pee inside and then he’ll naturally come to you and start barking to let him outside. when i was training my golden retriever to pee outside i got a piece of newspaper and placed it over the place he peed and picked it up and dragged my dog outside and had him sniff it and told him to pee over there i yelled at him for a while.. i guess he got the message cuz it worked.
The dog will like bark or waiting on you to take outside to go to the bathroom. It depend when need to go or not.
Try a bell. My oldest, Macie, also has a problem with not whining/barking when she needs to go out. She would stand in front of the door for hours, and past the puppy stage she didn’t need constant attention so it often went unnoticed by my family. We trained her with a bell attached to the door knob. If she needed to go out, she’d ring the bell. She picked it up rather quickly.
If he is a small puppy or even a larger one you have to watch for the signals. They always have to go after they wake up from a nap and after they eat. My husband puts down peed on sawdust (dog pee) in the same spot. Also I know they are expensive but a doggie door is worth its weight in gold, really. Sometimes you can get them at yard or moving sales. I use the kind that goes in the slider and a hole in the wall completely covered so they will go out to poop when it is raining.
You can hang a bell strip (like you see at Christmas time) on the doorknob and teach him to grab it and shake it when he wants to go out. Teach him "Gotta go out? Ring the bell." then let him out to potty and treat him when he does. Soon he’ll be doing it on his own!!!
The nice parts of this training is that you don’t have to run to see what he is barking about, because he won’t be barking to go out and you won’t have scratch marks on your wooden doors!!!
You have that the wrong way around you need to train it to go when you want it to
Start by taking it out every 2 hours during the day when he starts going use a command word that you want him to pee to when he has finished give lots of praise and have a play the biggest mistake that people make is taking the dog straight back into the house, have a play for 5 if he does not go then try again in 2 hours the average dog will need this repeated about 40 times before you can take them outside and give the command to pee/poo bet he will push a little out just for your praise dog needs to be about 8 month before command pee will work
Pay attention to what he does shortly before he has an accident in the house. That’s his way of telling you.
My puppy learned to walk to the back door and bark. It’s the only way I would know if I weren’t in the family room. When I know she needs to go, I tell her to speak and she does.
Does your dog understand it is to potty outside. It has to know this before it can be expected to tell you it wants out. If it does know to go out and does not wine or try to get your attention in some other way (mine prance in front of me), try this. Tie a string of bells to your door. Before taking your dog out to potty practice having his paw bat the bells and reward him. Take him out and when he potties, reward him again. Keep doing this. Your dog should begin to ring the bells to go out.
