You will need to get him/ her into a good feeding routine. At 14 weeks he should be having three meals a day, breakfast, lunch and supper.
You can drop this to two meals when he is 6 months old.
When he wakes up in the morning take him straight outside on a leash to a designated spot where you want him to relieve himself. Tell him to ‘go potty’ or any other phrase you choose to use, wait until he sniffs around and performs for you and then praise him, maybe give him a little treat for being a good boy, then take him straight indoors.
Then he can have his breakfast. Give him 15/20 minutes to digest his food then take him outside again and repeat the whole procedure Do the same at lunch time, after he has been asleep for any length of time, or played indoors, and again after his Supper.
Always take him out last thing at night before you settle him down at bed time.
Always keep him on a leash for potty training. The pup needs to know why he is out there and you need to be with him to teach him. It’s no use just putting a puppy outside and expect him to know why he is out there. He will only play around and then probably come in and pee or poop on your best rug.
It is very time consuming but if you persevere with this routine you will have a clean puppy in no time and you will find that he will start walking towards the door when he needs to go outside before long.
If you are vigilant and learn the signs that he wants to go out, i.e. pacing up and down and circling around and squatting then you will know when he/she needs to be taken outside.
Puppies do not have any real control over their bodily functions until they are around 6 months so you will get the odd ‘accident’ which is usually through no fault of the puppy’s. It is usually because it has been left alone for too long or you haven’t noticed the signs that the pup wants to go outside.
Good luck with your puppy..
Crate training is the way to go. Do a search on the net or get a book at the pet store.
Are you using a crate? This would be the answer for you if you already are not using one. A crate is not used for punishment as some might think. Dogs are denning animals so they enjoy a crate. Because a dog won’t soil his den..he won’t go in the crate and he’s learning to hold his bladder. I added a link with a scheduale to help you out. We used it with our pup and I couldn’t believe how easily he was potty trained. When he does go outside, make sure you reward him with lots of praise. If you can’t supervise him, then put him in the crate. You won’t be setting him for failure. Good Luck
i’m not a big fan of crate training, it makes me feel bad, like keeping a kid in a cage.
my baby girl made her last mess in the house about 11 years ago, when she was maybe 3 months old. i dragged her over by the scruff of the neck, smacked her in the behind with a newspaper and rubbed her face in it. she doesn’t like to be dirty.
i threw her outside for an hour or so, then brought her inside, bathed her, and she’s never done it since.
Um..idk
You must put your puppy on a eating schedule. After everytime it eats, take it outside to do business. For the urine, you must watch it. If it tries to go inside, pick it up even during business. They will stop. About everyone 3 hours, you need to take it out for a piss. Make sure you treat and say "Good job" after every business outside.
make sure you take her out after playing, when shes sniffing, after drinking….etc. All the time. Praise her and reward her when she goes outside. When you cant devote ALL of your attention to her crate her. Teach her that the crate is a good thing, give her a treat when she goes in. She will learn to like her crate. When shes out its good to block her into one room where you are so she cant go out of your sight. Its alot of work but it will be worth it. good luck!!!
